Literacy with Miss P

On Friday 13th July, I attended the UKLA’s first ever Writing for Pleasure Conference, hosted at Canterbury Christ Church University. As a huge advocate of writing for and with pleasure, I wanted to find out more about what this might look like in the classroom.

The conference featured an introductory talk from Tracy Parvin (UK Literacy Association President), a keynote speech from @WritingRocks_17 about the Writing For Pleasure manifesto, Piers Torday discussed what Writing For Pleasure means from the perspective of a children’s author and the final keynote was from Michael Rosen who imparted his knowledge and expertise on what Writing For Pleasure can look like in the classroom (linked to his wonderful new publication on the same subject).

I also attended two writing workshops throughout the day:

•  Nicola Izibili from The Writing Web hosted a workshop on the power of verbal feedback and conducting pupil conferencing as a writer-teacher to improve children as writers.
• Phil Ferguson and Ross Young led a popular workshop on how memoir writing can fabulously transform yourself and your community of apprentice writers.
